i think you might need it, i think part of this is advert for steam

Yes I'm pretty sure you need Steam for that,
after logging in with your account from that portal promotion area of the steam store site, you can download and install the game from Steam
I'm about to go to bed so I'll proceed with the download and installation tomorrow

 no problem bts,  and if anyone reaches the weighted companion cube, please tell me what the point of it is? it's just a cube with some hearts on it ...

I reached that part yesterday
Well practically you need the cube different times to complete the level (for example you can use put it on the ground and jump on it to reach a place which is too high to reach normally; or you can use it to push buttons like you do with the other cubes)
but the thing about it being a "companion cube", well this game is full of dark humour.
If you look around that level, in som points you can see weird messages left probably by "previous test subjects" about the cube, as they started considering the cube as a live thing and began talking to it after spending long times alone (practically what happens in the movie "Castaway", if you've seen it).

But anyway the companion cube is cute

yea after i posted that i beat the level and saw the room with the pictures of people with the companion cube for faces, and what i don't understand is, why do people love it so much, i'm probably being pessimistic or something, but i just don't get it

I think this action is a promotion stunt for the upcoming of Portal 2, as has been officially stated.

To Putt: from what they wrote it seems they made it free to promote Steam for mac (they made Steam and Portal availlable for mac aswell)
